Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Masterson Method®?

The Masterson Method® is an innovative form of equine and canine massage that allows an animal to release deep, accumulated pain and tension in muscles and connective tissue.

  • How does the Masterson Method differ from other types of bodywork or massage?

The Masterson Method is a conversation, requiring active listening to follow the animal’s responses. Giving the animals their say in the process allows them to connect, participate fully, and truly let go of what no longer serves them. Your animal’s safety and comfort are always emphasized, allowing tension and restriction to be released gently and efficiently. No high thrust or high velocity techniques are used. We don’t work “on” the animal; we work “with” the animal.

  • What are the benefits of the Masterson Method?

The Masterson Method can help improve your horse's or dog's range of motion, reduce tension and discomfort, enhance performance, address behavioral issues, and promote relaxation and overall well-being.

  • How long does a typical Masterson Method session last?

We are on your animal’s clock, so the work takes the time that it takes, depending on the animal’s responses and needs that day. Horse people should allow up to two hours, and dog people should allow up to an hour per session. The work is most effective during a quiet time of the day in a place where the animal would feel comfortable napping on a routine day.

  • How many sessions of the Masterson Method do I need to see results?

Clients usually see noticeable results after the first session. Most prefer regular sessions thereafter to continue to improve and maintain their friend’s comfort and mobility.

  • Is the Masterson Method suitable for all horses and dogs?

Absolutely. Our techniques are gentle, adaptable and suitable for most animals, regardless of age or condition.

  • Are there any contraindications or situations where the Masterson Method should not be applied?

While the Masterson Method is generally safe and well-tolerated, there are certain situations where caution should be exercised. Bodywork is an important spoke on the wheel of your animal’s wellness practices. We work with your veterinarian, farrier, dentist, nutritionist and trainer to ensure the best for your animals. It is best to consult with all the members of your wellness team when considering specific health issues or concerns.

  • What can I expect during a Masterson Method session?

During a session, the practitioner will use gentle touch, observe the animal’s responses, and follow their cues to release tension and promote relaxation. The practitioner may focus on different areas of the animal’s body, such as the neck, shoulders, back, and hindquarters.

  • Do you use tools or devices in a session?

My tools are my hands, body, mind, and spirit. Using Nature's tools allows me to receive your friend's biofeedback during a session and customize the work for maximum benefit. To help keep the connection with your animal during a session, I use a halter and lead rope with a horse and a collar and leash with a dog.

  • How often should I schedule Masterson Method sessions?

The frequency of sessions depends on your animal’s needs and goals. Initially, more frequent sessions may be recommended to address specific issues. From there, the practitioner can suggest a maintenance schedule tailored to your animal’s individual requirements.
